Meeting at the UN House in Brasilia discusses role of extractive industry in sustainable development

With the proposal to organize a continuous process of collaborative and interconnected dialogue at national and global forums the extractive sector, UN representatives Program for Development (UNDP), the federal government, businesses and non-governmental organizations held in the House UN, in Brasilia, the href="http://www.pnud.org.br/Noticia.aspx?id=4130" global dialogue on extractive sector and sustainable development .

The event, which took place on Wednesday (05), continued the dialogue on the extractive industry and sustainable development: strengthening the public-private-community cooperation in the context of Agenda Post-2015, held in December 2014 in Brasilia which resulted in the creation of a network on the extractive sector and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with the purpose of identifying practical measures to advance the sector's performance in the new agenda.

In recent months, the working group held a series of consultations at national and international levels with representatives of multilateral institutions, government agencies, mining, oil and gas companies, partner governments, associations, civil society organizations and academia. The results of the consultation will be presented on September 27 in New York, the UN General Assembly, during the Summit on Sustainable Development.

The resident representative of the UNDP, Jorge Chediek, attended the meeting and announced that global leaders have finalized negotiations on the new development agenda. To Chediek, "the private sector, particularly of extractive industries, it is essential to ensure the five Ps that make up the base of this agenda: people, planet, prosperity, peace and partnership." Chediek congratulated the group for the vision and commitment. "I hope this initiative will inspire other countries," he added.
